How we built our smart spending Chrome extension

How we built our free smart spending chrome extension

With the upcoming launch of our financial coaching app, we’re eager to give you a taste of how Claro can help everyone develop a smart-money mindset. And we thought, it’s so easy to overspend when shopping online, wouldn’t it be great if you could see exactly how many hours you’d have to work to pay for all the items in your shopping basket? So we decided to build a Chrome browser extension that could do just that.

At its core, our extension is a calculator that you can personalise with your own salary. We’ve built it so that it estimates your take-home salary and divides the total of your shopping basket by your hourly pay, based on an 8-hour working day. The extension uses standard UK tax brackets to calculate your take-home salary. Bear in mind that, depending on your circumstances that number can vary slightly from what you see in your payslips every month.

Your data is safe

At Claro, we take privacy very seriously. It is essential to us that everyone who uses our services is safe, which is why we’ve built the extension in a way that does not capture or share your shopping or salary data. The extension works silently in the background as you browse the internet to detect whether you’re on one of the websites it supports, but it does not record or store your browsing data. When you land on one of the eCommerce websites the extension supports, it activates automatically.

You can choose to disable that feature by setting the extension to only activate on specific sites or when you click on it. You can do that by going into your browser settings, selecting manage extensions and checking ‘On click’ or ‘On specific sites’ in the site access field.

Your salary data is only used within the calculator of the extension and is stored securely on your local device; this sensitive information never leaves your device and is never shared with our systems.

We only capture your email address when you choose to personalise the extension with your own salary. We use it to send you an email to confirm you are not a robot. This helps us keep the extension safe from online attacks. We might email you other smart money tips or tools at some point in the future, but you can always unsubscribe.
